So basically what you are saying is that JR is a HUMAN DRUM MACHINE really. Machine-like percision with the click and super consistency... maybe a bit of feel when needed, since he is human after all - right?
(Audience: "wtf?")
JR: "...I can't even do it."
(Audience: "WTF?! If this guy can't do it, who can?")
JR: "My job is to go there and make the tracks breathe and feel alive. That's what's I'm hired to do."

...horses for courses?
If JR is 'connecting the dots' then I'd give anything to be able to connect dots like JR.
They are both incredible IMO.

__ Vinnie Colaiuta
__ John Jr Robinson
I agree Derek.........You can't compare JR to Vinnie.
JR plays to the click and forms a pocket and keeps it there, he does not even try to throw 'licks' into the music, he plays it safe and there is nothing wrong with that.
Take a real listen sometime to 1 of the many tracks he has provided a backbeat too.
Off The Wall by Michael Jackson, Back In Th High Life by Steve Winwood are just 2 records that come to mind. We Are The World.....
I think for my tastes the best record JR did and sounded killer was Peter Framptons self titled come back record from 94, black and white portrait of Frampton holding a guitar, both JR and Denny Fongheiser own it on that disc.

Who would you hire for a studio session? JR or Steve Ferrone? They are very similar to me.
I almost said JR because he is invisible (Change the World, for example) but then i remembered 'Fields of Gold'...
Hmmm... i gotta say JR has something special to be able to make you groove your ass off and not even notice the drums... damn, good question.
"..drumming is not a competition - this is not a sport... this is an art."
I'm thinking we need to put this in huge letters at the top of the forum.
